“Anarchic”;“Coherent” Culture

“Anarchic” and “coherent” provided the starting point to create a dynamic architecture expression of the Community Center that represent the future for the place. Thus, providing a Peranakan Community Centre facility will aid the community needs in which helps to boost their economy and living standard. The exploration of the site elements; massing, rhythm and history; that retain the cultural aspect of the place will be seen as the key aspect of the building. These special characteristics that once defined the place were in the past (jetty settlement); an anarchic type of architecture expression that makes the place unique. However, anarchic architecture expression is not practical in the modern time or in the future. Thus, this gives rise to the question “In what way architecture can be expressed by the connections of traditional “anarchic” to “coherent” architecture?”

The fabric of the jetty community which once reflect the cultural expression of past which formed through the massing and anarchic elements. The character of the jetty can be reflected by the space and massing elements which reflect the identity in the cultural context. The angular façade treatment reflect the irregularity of the jetty settlements where aggressive extrusion of illegal extension. These give a sense of anarchic expression of the jetty culture and architecture history.

In order to create a new coherent expression of architecture, the design begins with the exploration of the original palimpsest of the site which acts as an anchor of the future within the past. The “coherent” architecture can be expressed through 3 different elements- space, volume and materials- consistent with anarchic elements which reflect across the building. These key elements can be seen as a glimpse for the future of Kuala Terengganu Chinatown. Thus, the connections between the traditional and modern culture are reflected through the elements.
